Volunteer Opportunities

Sign up to be a volunteer with Loving Spoonful

Download our 2012 Volunteer Form, fill it out and email it to holly [at] lovingspoonful [dot] org. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the continued support of our amazing volunteers!

And what do our volunteers do exactly?

Grow a Row:volunteering

  • Staff an info table at the Downtown Farmers Market
  • Accept, weigh and record food donations as part of our Grow a Row total goal
  • Transport food donated by farmers and backyard gardeners to agencies that feed the hungry – either in their vehicles or on their bikes!
  • Grow and donate produce to the Grow a Row campaign
Community Gardens:
  • Plant, maintain and harvest community garden plots for donation
  • Participate in weekly garden workbees at the Acorn Garden, Loving Spoonful’s own donation plot
  • Attend workshops on gardening for Grow a Row gardeners and interested community members
  • Share expertise on composting, seed saving and anything else gardening-related
  • Contribute to Harvest Celebrations and Spring Preparation/Fall Clean Up parties
  • Tend children’s gardens at the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre and various GROW Project garden locations

Community Kitchens:

  • Participate in Kitchen Workbees where we process fresh produce (freezing and/or canning) to make it easier for emergency meal programs to store and use
  • Take part in Kitchen Workshops where we share kitchen skills and make simple value-added recipes like tomato sauce and squash soup
  • Source fresh produce and other ingredients for workshops and workbees
  • Share expertise by leading workshops/workbees

Food Reclamation:

  • Help transport food within Kingston from grocers/restaurants to agencies that feed the hungry – either in their vehicles or on their bikes!
  • Establish new connections with food donors to decrease the amount of good food ending up in landfills – getting it to those who need it most

Promotions/Fundraising:

  • Promote our upcoming events by postering, distributing leaflets, sending e-mails or using their own unique talents to get the word out
  • Staff our community info booths at events such as Seedy Saturday and the Skeleton Park Music Festival
  • Ask their CSA to donate surplus produce
  • Stay informed by signing up for our newsletter
  • Hold 3rd Party fundraisers
  • Participate in other fundraising events like our 2010 Apple Pie fundraiser and 2011 Summer Lovin’ promotion

There are many other tasks for Loving Spoonful volunteers to undertake – let us know what your strengths and interests are and we’ll find a volunteer activity that’s right for you.
