Community Harvest Market

Community Harvest Group: Committed to building Community and enhancing food security in Kingston’s Rideau Heights neighbourhood.
The Community Harvest Working Group strives to make local food more accessible to the north Kingston community through a variety of projects. We are made up of community members and representatives from various organizations. Our projects include:
  • The Community Harvest Market; a market featuring local foods and crafts. Every Wednesday from June 13th to September 28th, 2pm-6pm, at the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre
  • From Earth to Table:  a free workshop series seeking to educate participants on organic good growing and seasonal cooking.
  • Community Harvest Gardens: sustainable urban gardens that engage the community, teach valuable skills, and provide fresh local produce to local markets as well as to Good Food Box Kingston and to food security organizations.

What is the Community Harvest Market?

In 2009, we are introduced a pilot market, called the Community Harvest Market on the Grounds of the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre. The market ran from May 31 to October 25 on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. The Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre is the ideal location for this project as it already serves as an activity hub for the area.   We have the full support of the City of Kingston in this initiative, as well as local service clubs, businesses and community organizations.  The Community Harvest Market is truly a community endeavour.

in 2012 the market will run every Wednesday from June 13th to September 28th, from 2-6pm. It is located at the Wally Elmer Neigbourhood Centre parking lot, 50 McCauley Street (off Weller Avenue, near Daly). Look for us inside on the ice pad during foul weather.

What is the goal of the market? To provide fresh, healthy vegetables and fruits grown by local producers, including: baked goods, honey, preserves, specialty items such as humus and spanakopita, as well as crafts created by local artisans. There are  monthly Special Events with free food, local musicians, community activities, and five, $1.00 vouchers to spend that market day in exchange for filling out a survey based on your experience of the market.

From Earth to Table

From Earth to Table is a free workshop series that teaches organic gardening and seasonal cooking skills.

We meet the first Wednesday of every month beginning on Wednesday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.   The workshop begins with the garden – indoors in the winter and at our 700 square foot teaching garden at the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Recreational Centre in spring, summer and fall.  We learn how to design, plant, and maintain a small backyard garden, then we move to the kitchen where we use produce from the garden to create a wonderful lunch.  Learn how create your own garden and then how to use your seasonal produce to make delicious, nutritious, and inexpensive meals for you and your family.

Community Harvest Gardens

Community Harvest Gardens seek to give participants an opportunity to take an active role in sustainable local agriculture. Our gardens produce an abundance of vegetables while providing an opportunity for community members to engage in thoughtful and meaningful work that builds community and changes lives. Our locally grown vegetables are distributed free to all participants, are donated to food security organizations, and are sold at the Community Harvest Market and through the Kingston Good Food Box.

In 2011 we had two gardens: the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Recreational Centre Garden and the Lyon’s Street Garden.

The Wally Elmer Garden is a 700 Square foot garden which is maintained by the children in the Community Harvest Market Programming and the participants from Earth to Table. This Garden was proudly supported and implemented in 2009 by the Home Depot, Kingston Community Health Centres and the Cataraqui- Kingston Rotary Club.

The Lyon’s Street Garden is a 2, 000 square foot garden which was developed in 2011 with generous help from many groups from the community. The students from QECVI cleared the land and built two beautiful compost bins, while the students from Frontenac Secondary school built the storage shed. Among with other generous donators; the Kingston Home Depot, the National Farmers Union and the Kingston Horticultural Society helped make this garden a reality.

The produce grown in the garden is sold through Good Food Box Kingston and the Community Harvest Market, as well as donated to Loving Spoonful and to those who participate in the garden. For 2012 we hope to see more wonderful success!
