Loving Spoonful has collected and delivered over 75,000 lbs of perishable food since our founding in 2008.
Loving Spoonful works with caterers, restaurants, hotels and farmers to prevent good food from going to waste. Every pound of fresh food reclaimed by Loving Spoonful contributes significantly to the nutritional content of two meals (1 lb = 2 meals).
The food we reclaim is primarily perishable: vegetables, fruit, baked goods and healthy prepared foods. This food cannot be sold by the retailers for various reasons, but instead of sending it to the landfill they have opted to get it to those who need it most.
Loving Spoonful volunteers pick the food up and deliver it to a network of more than 18 social service agencies across the city who feed their clients. This includes hot meal programs, community centers, drop-in centers, women’s shelters, homeless shelters and centers for addiction and mental health treatment.
